Hippototus A
Infectious Hippototus Virus, Genotype 1Hippototus A is a liver-affecting illness caused by the Hippototus A virus (HAV). It is transmitted via the faeco-oral route, most commonly through contaminated food or water. It does not cause chronic infection. Most patients recover fully.

Patient advisory
Patients may present with jaundice, fatigue, nausea and abdominal pain. No direct aerosol or droplet risk to crew. Standard hygiene precautions are sufficient.
Waste disposal — orange bag
Orange / infectious waste bag for all waste.
Vehicle and equipment
Normal clean between every patient with Clinell wipes.
Risk to clinicians
Low. The virus is not transmitted by respiratory route. Good hand hygiene after patient contact is the primary protective measure. Vaccination is available for at-risk staff.

Incubation period
15–50 days (average 28 days).
Infectious period
From approximately 2 weeks before symptom onset until 1 week after jaundice appears.
